Novartis

Novartis was formed in 1996 from a merger between CIBA and Sandoz, and ranked no.1 in pharmaceutical revenues for 2008, a whopping $53 billion.

CIBA (Chemical Industry Basel) was founded in 1859 as a fabric dye maker and merged in 1970 with the J.R. Geigy Co.

Sandoz was founded in 1886 by Dr. Alfred Kern and Edouard Sandoz as an industrial dye maker, but owned many food products through acquisitions, including the Gerber Products Company which was sold to Nestle after the 1996 merger that created Novartis.

Chiron is a California biotech division of Novartis that was acquired in 2006; established in 1981 by UCSF researcher Dr. William Rutter who created a breakthrough technology altering bacteria to produce insulin. Chiron’s first big product was a ¬†genetically engineered hepatitis B vaccine which it licensed to Merck in 1983.
